Adlershof Research Forum 2024: Innovations and strategic impulses for the science campus
AFF poster prize was awarded to Juliane Scholl
Almost 100 scientists, young researchers and founders came together to the Adlershof Research Forum on 11.11.2024 at Erwin Schrödinger Centre to discuss current developments and challenges facing the science location Adlershof.
Prof. Dr. Caren Tischendorf, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), Prof. Dr. Ulrich Panne, President of the BAM Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (Federal institute for global safety standards) and Roland Sillmann, Managing Director of WISTA Management GmbH, opened the event. They offered an insight on the developments of the last two years on the HU campus, in the IGAFA member institutions and in the Berlin-wide research network BR50. The new WISTA working environments – ST3AM were also introduced. ST3AM is intended to provide an answer to the changing requirements of the workplace of the future and serves as an innovation and collaboration space for start-ups and established companies. Prof. Dr. Annekatrin Hoppe, Professor of Occupational Health Psychology at HU, presented current research findings on healthy working models in hybrid work.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Patrick Scheele, Director of the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH), summed up his experiences being in this position for a year and presented latest research results from his institute. One focus of his work is the precision measurement of time, acceleration, gravity and electric and magnetic fields. The potential applications of these technologies range from new standards in measurement technology to space missions and the development of sensor technologies.
A further impulse came from Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Christoph Markschies, President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, who pointed out the current budget crisis and the associated need for action. “There is no room for fear,” said Markschies and emphasised the importance of proactively dealing with possible cuts. He appealed to the scientific community to network more closely and develop its own cost-saving measures before external cuts take effect. “Berlin is a wonderful research centre, but we could work together even better,” said Markschies. He also argued in favour of more targeted science planning and the creation of a state science council in Berlin in order to better coordinate strategic processes. Cooperation with Brandenburg was also a topic: Markschies pointed out that the potential for cooperation with the neighbouring state had not yet been fully exploited. He also suggested more institutional cooperation and a stronger focussing of the scientific institutions to reduce duplicate structures.
The topics currently being researched by young scientists in Adlershof could be heard and seen in an exciting poster pitch and following poster show. 35 posters were submitted. The poster prize of 500 euros was awarded to Juliane Scholl from BAM, who presented her research on the topic of “Fluorinated Lithium-Ion Battery Additives: Forever Chemicals of Tomorrow?”.
The transfer from science to industry was another important aspect of the event. The start-ups Nosh.bio, C1 Green Chemicals and Hyphox presented their product developments.
The Adlershof Research Forum (AFF) is a full-day conference co-organised by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, IGAFA e. V. and WISTA Management GmbH and serves as a platform for location-based scientific exchange in Adlershof. It presents an overview of current research on site – the “Adlershof Knowledge” – and takes place within the framework of the “Berlin Science Week”.
