Bits and bytes for all walks of life
What do the capital city, safety, traffic, logistics, health, and administration all have in common? They all work with modern information and communication technologies – technologies that are no longer merely relevant to, but have become key factors in today’s business; technologies that are developed and realised in many pilot projects and many networks run by trade and science in and around the capital city.
Pooling their resources dedicated corporate networks e.g. for geographic information, security, IT, mobility, or modernisation of administration provide a range of services that only major enterprises can offer elsewhere. The backbone is formed by almost five thousand predominantly specialist IT SMEs in Berlin and Brandenburg and their fifty thousand employees.
Today virtually nothing can run true in logistics and traffic without operations planning, telematics and safety engineering. Without simulations, diagnostics and telemedicine the health sector would soon be at a loss. And without analyses, early warning systems and biometry, safety could become a stumbling block. All of these fields are supported by powerful IT Systems that are being researched and designed in Adlershof, too.
Seven universities, twenty one other institutions of higher education and over 170,000 students in addition to 250 private and public research centres provide the basis for the performance of industrial and service sectors in Berlin and Brandenburg both today and in the future. As the Spokesman for the local initiative “We make IT.berlinbrandenburg” I find it particularly important to look beyond the state borders and to act in concert.
Without its neighbour Brandenburg Berlin would not be what it is today: a metropolitan region where the quality of life, job availability and earnings level are higher than in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Munich. This facts from the Ernst & Young study are today confirmed by nearly everybody – every visitor, every new Berliner, and ever young entrepreneur.
Bits and bytes are key building blocks in Berlin und Brandenburg – for products, services and therefore economic development and quality of life.
