FP7 Project NEREIDS
European Collaborative Project for Maritime Surveillance
After a long negotiation with the European Commission the FP7 collaborative project NEREIDS started on 1st June, 2011. Under the topic - Contributing to the \"S\" in GMES - Developing pre-operational service capabilities for Maritime Surveillance- the project will last 36 months with a total budget of 6.02 millions euro within 4 millions euro of EU contribution.
The wide consortium leaded by GMV Aerospace and Defense SA Unipersonal (Spain) and composed by Active Space Technologies GmbH (Germany), Eosphere Limited (UK), Aerospace Innovation GmbH (Germany), GMVIS, Skysoft SA (Portugal), Guardia Civil Espanola (Spain), European Union Satellite Centre (Spain), Advanced Computer Systems A.C.S. S.p.A. (Italy), JRC – Joint Research Centre – European Commission (Belgium), Aratos Technologies S.A. (Greece), Nato Undersea Research Centre (Italy), TNO (The Netherlands), Thales Communications S.A. (France), Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya (Spain), Znanstvenoraziskovalni center slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti (Slovenia) and Fraunhofer-gesellschaft zur foerderung der angewandten forschung e.v. (Germany) will go through the need of a deep analysis to define the GMES contribution to maritime security services, this is not only a matter of ship detection but it is a matter how space based information can be integrated as an element for maritime situation awareness.
- NEREIDS starts from user requirements, operational scenarios and arrive at a point where specific cases can directly be targeted with EO.
- NEREIDS will bring innovate capabilities based on EO to make a best exploitation of available space technologies.
- NEREIDS capabilities will bring enhanced EO capabilities by combining different sensors with innovative data fusion techniques.
- NEREIDS will bring a toolbox approach enabling share data an capabilities and support a common maritime picture.
- NEREIDS will make an analysis of maritime surveillance in a cross-sectorial approach and will bring best capabilities using best use of available space assets.
Active Space Technologies GmbH will contribute to the risk analysis for state-of-the-art and innovative Earth Observation technologies, developing innovative orbits with short revisit time to observe piracy hot spots in equatorial regions, with the necessary investigation of the relevant impacts on the space segment and with a proper gap analysis. In addition, Active Space Technologies will assist the NEREIDS team in the procurement of data from the Indonesian Satellite System.
