The Debates - Chancellor Candidates Duel on TV
Running the full circle in Adlershof. Once upon a time in Adlershof, there was a young physicist who arrived at work every morning at 7:15 a.m. at the office building of the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry to brew the first pot of Turkish coffee for her colleagues. The thirty year-old had just completed her doctorate thesis and was working on the Campus of the Akademie der Wissenschaften. Of course, we are referring to Angela Merkel in the year 1984. More than 20 years later, she has come full circle. Angela Merkel returned to Adlershof – this time, not as a physicist, but as the opposition candidate to run against Gerhard Schröder in a TV debate. It is Part 2 in a political showdown that began in 2002 with the debates involving Edmund Stoiber and Gerhard Schröder. In 2005, Studio Berlin was once again awarded the contract to produce the broadcast. Why? Because everyone knew an event of this magnitude made for TV would be simultaneously broadcast by all German channels, ARD, ZDF, RTL, and SAT.1 and, that the perfect framework conditions would be needed.
